The Gift of Christmas

“Fear not, Mary,” an angel said.
“You are the one
that God’s ordained to mother His
beloved Son.
His plans for you have been unfurled;
you’ll birth the Savior of the world.
The hope for all eternity
has just begun.

“Fear not, Joseph,” an angel spoke.
“You’re not beguiled,
for your betrothed, sweet virgin girl,
is with God’s child!
His name shall be Immanuel;
until He’s grown, with you He’ll dwell.
You two shall wed and raise the boy,
tender and mild.”

They journeyed through the rolling hills
of Galilee
to pay a tax, in Bethlehem, the king decreed.
Soon Mary felt pains from within
but there was no room in the inn,
so babe was laid in a small trough
where cattle feed.

A bright light shone o’er shepherds as
they watched their sheep.
“Fear not,” an angel said, causing
their hearts to leap.
“The Son of God is born this night!”
The good news gave them such delight,
they hurried to the place where babe
was fast asleep.

The Wise Men from the East studied
the stars up high
and saw a new light twinkling in
the wintry sky.
They traveled where the new star led,
unto the new king’s lowly shed;
bowing before the swaddled child,
with joy they cried.

“Fear not,” our God has said to us,
“I give to you
My only Son to bring the peace
that you pursue.
This gift I give, if you’ll receive;
I only ask that you believe
that He will cleanse your soul and make
your life anew."
