Have you ever had things run through your mind that have no good answers? Let me give you an example.
Today, it was pouring down rain. I was rushing to get inside the building where I work, and just as I reached the door, a woman was coming out; carrying several bags and a gentleman was in a wheelchair behind her. I held the door open, while rain pelted my head. In unison, they said ‘thank you’, and automatically, ‘you’re welcome’ came out of my mouth.
That brings me to ask this… What does ‘you’re welcome’ mean? I’ve bounced this thought around in my head more times than I can count. I don’t really know the answer. I can’t wrap my head around it. You are welcome to be thankful that my head is getting wet? No. That’s not it. You are welcome to go through the doorway before me? No. Hmm… There is no answer. Not one that satisfies me.
Yes. I’m crazy. Weird stuff bounces around in my head all the time. Like, why do we duck when people say heads up?
Oh great, now you have me wondering.
ReplyDeleteHow do you explain that? I asked my hubby what "you're welcome" meant and he said.
"It means you are welcome" then gave me that, um... what? look.
