A Modern Witch - Book Review

A Modern Witch, by Debora Geary, is not at all what I expected. It was much more than a fantasy story. What a delightful read. This book is filled with fun, adventure, magic, and heart.

Lauren is a successful, well liked Chicago realtor. While grocery shopping online, she's sucked into a strange chat room, where a conversation with witches in California ensues. They tell her she was discovered by a special tracking code they placed online to find other witches. Lauren is sure there’s a flaw in the code. She's not a witch—is she?

The California witches send Jamie, a handsome witch trainer, to detect Lauren’s possible powers. With the support of Jamie and his extended witch-family, her world becomes filled with witches, lessons, and magic spells. In a whirlwind of life altering discoveries, only two things calm her spinning mind—her best friend, Nat, and several pints of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

There are many fabulous characters in this story, but my favorite is Aervyn, Jamie’s four-year-old witchling nephew. Somehow, Aervyn’s personality and warmth emanates from the pages of this story and grasps my heart.

What did I expect A Modern Witch, by Debora Geary to be about? Well, I assumed a bewitching romance would blossom and be nourished by magic and mystery. I was way off the mark. Yes, the story touches on each of those points, but the roots go much deeper.

As this company of modern witches became more familiar, I began to feel a part of their non-conventional family of magical people. I enjoyed spending time with them, and can’t wait for the following books in this series to come out!

[Book 2: A Hidden Witch - late summer 2011, and book 3: A Reckless Witch - the holidays 2011.]
