Excerpt: It wouldn’t be wise to let her imagination run away with her, to make too much of her encounter with Alex. He was a handsome, charming man who might join the family for dinner one night, but he was on his way to war—and she might never see him after that.
Excerpt: Soft, feminine laughter rang out from the other side of the tent. Alex looked up and spotted Penny as she engaged one of the soldiers in conversation. Her dancing eyes and carefree smile stirred a longing in his heart.
It was hard to put this book down. I love stories that take place during WWII, especially Christian fiction. Carrie
Turansky paints a vivid backdrop during this time in history in her third
installment of the Edwardian Brides books,
The Refuge at Highland Hall. I like her writing style, with vibrant
descriptions and an authentic sense. Sinking into this time period is easy, and
I feel enriched.
Penny
Ramsey puts others first, leaving her own desires aside to help her sister.
Alex Goodwin begins a friendship with pretty Penny, but he is a pilot in the
war and has to put his duty first, no matter how dangerous. They both struggle
during this dreadful time, and find solace in letters.
There
is a strong secondary story going on that adds to the fullness of Penny and
Alex’s story. I feel I’ve gained friends and can’t wait to read the prior books
in this series.
