Story Genius (Book Review)

This book surprises me.

I’m surprised that Story Genius hasn’t bored me with the repetitive write-what-you-know spiel most writing books share, or hammering goal, motivation, and conflict into my already congested brain. Instead, it shares a fresh and purposeful view of writing a character-driven story that will keep readers captivated.

If only I had this information before I fell into the trap the front cover so blatantly states:

How To Use Brain Science To Go Beyond Outlining And Write A Riveting Novel*[ *Before You Waste Three Years Writing 327 Pages That Go Nowhere ]

I’ve already demanded a lot from my highlighter (worky, worky, busy bee!) and have barely navigated half of the book. I see my manuscript(s) through different eyes—gaining insight on what is and isn’t working in my story and why.

My only con (and it’s nothing major): I wish there were more diagrams, or other visuals to break up the long paragraphs and chockfull pages. Something to give my tired eyes a short break while navigating through the wealth of info. The font is fairly small, and the pages display very little white space.

This go-to guide is definitely going on my keeper shelf, and I’ve no doubt it will be a go-back-to book as well.

I received a review copy of Story Genius from Blogging for Books.
